What does it mean to be a Canadian? Ask someone who isn't from this country and you may get decriptions like; "polite, courteous, patriotic, good natured, and humble". To many foreigners, Canada is the land of freedom and opportuntity. It's a place where you can create a better life for your family.
We are the "True North Strong and Free" because of the sacrifices of a few on behalf of many. We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave men and women of our military, and to those who have taken an oath to serve and protect. Whether you wear camouflage, a badge, turnout gear, or scrubs you are a hero and deserve the thanks of a nation on an ongoing basis.
It may seem like only a token; once each year on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month as a country we take a moment of silence to honor our fallen heros, and say a collective "thank you"to those who have, and do, Stand on Guard for Thee. It is incumbent on us to be forever mindful of the sacrifices they have made to protect the freedoms we all too often take for granted. We must ensure that future generations understand "that from failing hands they throw the torch: be yours to hold it high!"
This holiday season, take the time to thank someone in uniformfor their service to our country.
Perform a random act of kindness. If you're a business owner, offer them a special discount. Simply bow your head, or shake their hand. The choice is yours. Oh, and don't be affraid to wish them a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Habari Gani, or Joyous Mawlid-al-Nabi. After all, these religious freedoms are one of the very things that they fought to protect, and are also one of the main factors that makes us uniquely Canadian.
